Makita is a Japanese company that manufactures power tools and other equipment. They are the world's largest manufacturer of power tools.

Makita was founded in 1915 by Shōzō Makita to manufacture saw blades for the lumber industry. The company expanded into manufacturing other products, including radios and televisions, before World War II. After World War II, Makita began to manufacture power tool parts for their parent company Tsubaki. In 1955, they began manufacturing their own line of power tools.

In 1962, they introduced the first portable electric drill to Japan. It was not until 1980 that Makita introduced its first cordless drill to the market. The next year they introduced a line of cordless screwdrivers and in 1984 they released a line of cordless vacuum cleaners.
