The North Face is a company that specializes in outdoor apparel and gear.
The North Face was founded by Douglas Tompkins and his then-wife, Susie Tompkins, in 1968. They started the company with $5,000 of their own money and a business loan of $5,000. The first store was located in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. In 1977, the company introduced its first product line of outerwear for women. In 1978, it opened its first store outside of California in Seattle's Northgate Mall. By 1980, the North Face expanded to 27 stores nationwide and had begun selling clothing for men as well as children.
In 2011, The North Face sold the majority of its operations to VF Corporation for $350 million.
