<p>In its early days Sputnik News was a Russian government sponsored website that served as part of Russia's foreign broadcasting service. It is now an autonomous non-profit organization that operates out of Moscow.</p><p>Sputnik News is a major international news agency and radio network in Russia, with branches in 30 countries around the world including many former Soviet Union states.</p><p>It was launched by the Russian state-owned news agency Rossiya Segodnya on December 10, 2014 to provide an alternative assessment on world events to Western viewers, a mission which requires "restoring some balance" in the Western-dominated global news coverage.</p><p>Sputnik News has been compared to Russia Today (RT), another television network funded by the Russian government and influential abroad. They are both considered mouthpieces of the Kremlin and purveyors of propaganda intended to bolster support for President Putin and his policies</p>
