Spar is a Dutch multinational that provides branding, supplies, and support services for independently owned and operated gas stations. The company operates in over 20 countries with over 7,000 gas stations worldwide.
The company was founded by Hubert Joly in 1965. He purchased a small chain of local gas stations and renamed them “Spar” which is the Dutch word for the English word “save”.
In 1996, Spar was acquired by Royal Dutch Shell who still owns it to this day.
The company has since been expanding internationally and has been growing by acquiring new companies that also operate independently owned gas stations around the world.
