Shazam is an app that can identify the song, TV show or movie playing in the background. It uses a microphone to listen to the audio and identify it by matching it against a database of over ten million songs.
It was founded by Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang and Dhiraj Mukherjee in 1999. The app was originally called "Shazam Entertainment". The name is derived from "shazaam," an onomatopoeia used to represent the sound made when something is recognized or understood. Shazam Entertainment's original purpose was to help people identify music that they heard while not knowing what it was. However, its functionality has been expanded to include identification of television shows, movies and commercials on TV.
