The reCAPTCHA approach is to present the user with two words: one that the user enters, and one with a string of characters. The user is asked to identify which word is the actual word from an image of distorted letters. If the word entered by the user matches the word from an image of distorted letters, then it proves that the person is human and not a bot.
The reCAPTCHA system has been used by several high-profile web services such as Google, Facebook, and Yahoo! to prevent abuse of their comment systems or other features requiring human verification.
