The company has six business units: Consumer Health, Oncology (cancer), Sandoz (generic drugs), Alcon (ophthalmics), Novartis Pharma and Novartis Animal Health.

Novartis was founded by Dr. Alfred Gesser and Dr. Heinrich Rinderknecht on July 27, 1996 with the merger of the two companies Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz Laboratories to create the world’s largest producer of generic drugs.

Novartis is one of the few companies that still manufactures penicillin and tetracycline antibiotics as well as their generics equivalents; it also produces other antibiotics, such as erythromycin and doxycycline, among others.
