Nginx stands for "Next-generation web server." It is a reverse proxy and has gained popularity due to its surprisingly light weight, scalable architecture and high performance.

Nginx supports various programming languages like C, Java, Lua, Perl and PHP. OpenNginx software is widely available under GNU General Public License v2 or later versions. The software was originally written in 2007 by Kyungsub Whang with assistance from Dmitry Starodumov and Igor Sysoev as open-source extensions that have since served upward of 320 million web requests every day.
