The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City. The team is part of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Islanders began playing in 1972 as an expansion team with a distinctive "NY" logo. They were one of three teams that joined the NHL for the start of the 1967-68 season, along with the Pittsburgh Penguins and California Seals. The team won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983.
In recent years, they have been plagued by financial difficulties and poor performance. As a result, they have not qualified for postseason play since 2007.
