The National Basketball Association had spread over three decades as a game of two-on-twos where both sides were basically playing against themselves. These two teams always ended up with 12 players on the floor even though games usually allowed 13 to be on the court. In 1967-68 season, teams averaged 23 players per game because there were no substitutes left when games started to get out of hand down in this depleted state.
