It was founded in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) as one of the first electronic stock exchanges.</p><p>Nasdaq's CEO, Adena Friedman, has been named as one of the most powerful women in business and is considered to be one of the most influential people in global finance.</p><p>Nasdaq has grown over time from a small index provider to an international organization with more than 2,400 employees and more than 1,600 listings on its exchanges.</p><p>In 2001, Nasdaq merged with OMX to form OMX Group. In 2007, it merged with American Stock Exchange (AMEX). In 2013, it became a part of NASDAQ OMX Group Incorporated after NASDAQ OMX Group acquired NASD and merged it with NYSE Euronext to form a single company called NYSE Group.</p>
