The company was founded in 1902 as a partnership between Thomas Woodall and Samuel Smith. The first factory was located in London and the company had been importing tobacco from the United States.</p><p>In 1907, Imperial Tobacco entered into a contract with the American Tobacco Company to manufacture its cigarettes for sale in Canada. In 1909, Imperial Tobacco acquired the cigarette manufacturing operations of W.D & H.O Wills of Bristol, England, which were located at North Street Factory in Nottingham and merged these operations with its own plant at Richmond Street to form Imperial Tobacco Company (Nottingham).</p>
