Flickr is a photo and video hosting service created on February 2005 by Ludovic Fallaux and Stewart Butterfield. It's still based in San Francisco, California. At the time, it had to do with image storage across PC-based bulletin boards. After releasing its software to the public in 2005, Donald Knuth wrote of his excitement in "The New York Times": "It's been nearly a decade since I sold my stock in CompuServe and told myself over the next five years or so I would write The Art of Computer Programming."

As of 2016, Flickr has seemingly gone out of business. This could be due to the runaway success of Facebook now taking their users away back to its own social media platform or because mobile technology destroyed them with features such as camera phones that exceed what Flickr
