FedEx was founded by Frederick W. Smith on September 18, 1971, as Federal Express Corporation. It began operating on July 1, 1973 and was originally located in Memphis, Tennessee. The company's name was changed to FedEx Corporation in 1997 to better reflect the company's original name.

The company has grown from a small local delivery service into one of the world’s largest shipping companies with $40 billion in annual revenue and $14 billion in net profit for the fiscal year ending March 31st 2018. FedEx also offers ground transportation services through FedEx Express, which is one of the world's largest airlines with annual revenues of $16 billion for fiscal year 2018.
