Docker is technology for virtualisation. It helps physical servers run applications inside their host operating system and in their own container, regardless of architecture or environment.
Docker was announced in 2013 by dotCloud as an open-sourced project with a vision of creating what they called "coreOS" – a platform providing core Internet technologies. Here, development teams build and deliver entire application stacks including Docker containers that replicate the production infrastructure.
In 2017 Project Atomic was initiated to integrate larger infrastructure services, such as LDAP and OpenStack alongside Docker so that individuals could manage very large deployments across public clouds more easily. This new service is built on Kubernetes, Google’s open-source orchestration solution.
