The Colorado Avalanche is an American professional hockey team based in Denver that competes in the National Hockey League (NHL).
It was founded on June 22, 1972, as part of the World Hockey Association (WHA) which is known to be an intrigue factor revolving around which hockey league would succeed the National Hockey League. It was originally called the Colorado Rockies but changed it’s name to the Avalanche after a failed merger with its old rival and fellow WHA transplant, the New York Islanders.
