<p>The British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority is a provincial crown corporation, operating as a regulated monopoly in the province of British Columbia, Canada. BC Hydro generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to more than 1.6 million customers throughout the province.</p><p>BC Hydro was established in 1961 as a provincial Crown corporation to serve the needs of its citizens and communities. It was created by an Act of the Legislature, with its head office located in Vancouver.</p><p>In 1994, it became an independent agency reporting to the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum Resources. In April 2009, BC Hydro merged with three other government entities to form a new Crown corporation called EnergyBC Inc., which assumed responsibility for all energy matters in British Columbia under one ministry: Energy Policy and Projects Division (EPD).</p>
