About BC Hydro Brand

The British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority is a provincial crown corporation, operating as a regulated monopoly in the province of British Columbia, Canada. BC Hydro generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to more than 1.6 million customers throughout the province.

BC Hydro was established in 1961 as a provincial Crown corporation to serve the needs of its citizens and communities. It was created by an Act of the Legislature, with its head office located in Vancouver.

In 1994, it became an independent agency reporting to the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum Resources. In April 2009, BC Hydro merged with three other government entities to form a new Crown corporation called EnergyBC Inc., which assumed responsibility for all energy matters in British Columbia under one ministry: Energy Policy and Projects Division (EPD).
