Mattel created Barbie almost sixty years ago. Most of us who grew up in the late 20th century can recognize her from her contemporary likeness. She is a girl with fashionable outfits, extravagant makeup and wavy blonde hair.
Today American society is full of educated feminists who have reacted harshly to all things considered feminine; like Barbies vision of femininity and the sexism that comes along with it. So what are the large social, political, and cultural implications of such icon?
Barbie's legacy over decades has left an unmistakable mark on popular culture as we now see Barbie reflected in widely known fashion trends, host iconic images like Marilyn Monroe’s dress from “The Prince and The bikini a la mode” which was famously owned by Marilyn Monroe herself, or even notoriously depicted as one of the characters in “The Princess and The Pea”.Barbie's physical characteristics such as her slim figure, straight blonde hair, and blue eyes are often seen as examples of idealized beauty standards for women. In this way, Barbie has become a pop culture symbol of American ideals and can be interpreted in multiple ways by different individuals.
