The 2022 AFF Championship will be the 12th edition of the men's football championship organised by the Football Federation of Malaysia.
The Malaysian government has been pushing for a multi-purpose stadium for many years but with no success. The last time such a stadium has hosted an international match was back in 1996. After years of prodding, Malaysia finally broke ground on its first national arena in over 20 years namely KLFA Stadium Kajang or better known as Bandar Utama from February 2019. The formal ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) backed their pledge to award the hosting rights to Malaysia so that Kajang stadium can happen in 2022 and have every team playing at least one home game there while also expanding it to accommodate 68,000 spectators which is more than twice its current size making it encompassing sufficient capacity to host both semi-finals and finals.
