AEG was a German producer of electrical equipment founded in Berlin as the Deutsche Edison-Gesellschaft für angewandte Elektr. It was one of the largest companies of its kind in Europe and had factories in many countries, including France, Italy, and Russia. AEG was founded by Werner von Siemens and Johann Georg Siemens. It was originally called the Deutsche Edison-Gesellschaft für angewandte Elektr. The company's first factory opened in 1883 on Schützenstraße in Berlin-Charlottenburg. AEG produced a wide variety of electrical equipment, including electric motors, generators, transformers, capacitors and electrical meters. It also manufactured lighting fixtures such as lamps and streetlights as well as electrical appliances like electric stoves, irons and vacuum cleaners. By the turn of the twentieth century, AEG had become one of the largest manufacturers in Europe. By 1914, it had factories across Europe and in North America. During World War I the company pioneered military use of electrical equipment for communications and manufacturing purposes such as welding machines.
